This year’s Silver Society Prize saw young silversmiths from across the country submit entries for consideration by a panel of three judges. The standard of the submissions was fantastic, and the judges would like to thank and congratulate all those who took the time to enter. The ingenuity, craftsmanship and talent demonstrated by the applicants was fantastic to see, and the judges deliberated at length before selecting the winner.
The Silver Society Prize for 2024 was awarded to Alice Fry for her Geode Celebration Box. It was noted that her work was brilliantly executed, unique, and demonstrated an ability to bring together chasing, texturing, colouring and construction, as well as the use of various materials, in a seamless and highly effective manner. The judges very much liked the way in which her piece could be taken apart for use in a number of different ways, with the option to hang the cover on the wall and use the base as a dish.
Alice gave a fantastic presentation to Silver Society members on 23rd October 2024, explaining how she had made the piece, from anodising the metal to endow it with its vivid purplish-blue colour, to hammering and chasing the silver and Niobium to provide the varying textures on the cover and base. Members enjoyed asking Alice questions about the making process and the inspiration behind her piece.
The Silver Society Prize continues to act as a fantastic springboard for talent, and we would encourage all those who are eligible for next year’s Prize to apply when entries open in 2025. In recent years, the best submissions have showcased a wide variety of practical skills, combining these with artistry and ingenuity to produce innovative and well-executed works.
